ACADEMIC OLYMPICS (Jan.- Feb.)

The Academic Olympics gives students the opportunity to compete in an annual district-wide Academic Olympics Day. Areas of competition at the Middle School level include Mathematics, Oratory, Spelling, Writing, and Scholar Quiz. Tryouts and practice sessions for the Olympics are carried out by various faculty sponsors.

  

 

 

Character Coucil

Character Council is a group of  7th and 8th grade students who are working together to create a safe and peaceful environment.  They also run school-wide, grade-level, and color team competions and contest.

Computer Club

Meets 4th & 5th Tuesday of each month. Students will assist in updating the school's web page.  Experience on the Internet is NOT required.

  

 

  

Foreign Language Club

Meets once a month.  Club limited to 20 people

Students will partake in various activities including corresponding with a pen pals, guest speakers, and presentations. 

  

 

  

Geography Club

Meets once a month.

Students play geography games, computer & others.  Practice direction, mapping & location skills.

  

 

  

Homework Club

Homework Club is after school, from 2:10 to 3:30. It is an opportunity for students to get all their work done before they go home. A+ tutors from the high school will also be available for the students to use as a resource.

  

 

  

Math Counts Club

Mathcounts is a national coaching and competition program designed to stimulate 7th-8th grade students' interested and achievement in mathematics. This is an excellent opportunity to engage in social as well as intellectual activities for students who excell in mathematics. Students particiapte in a number of local competitions between area middle school where the sudents are given the opportunity to compete individually as well as in teams.

National Junior Honor Society

(NJHS)  

 

Meets once a month on Fridays

Requirements include a 3.3 GPA (or better) after the first semester; display of qualities of leadership, character, citizenship and service.  Students fill out an information sheet which is screened by a faculty committee and then students are notified of acceptance into this honorary organization.  Students are formally inducted during a candlelight ceremony in late April in the evening.

 

This is an honorary service organization.  The members collect money for the Christmas Carols Association, decorate the commons for the holidays, sell candy to help the Heart Fund and provide assistance to the administration and staff whenever needed.

OMNI Club

TOGETHER, WE PROMOTE THE POWER

OF AFTER SCHOOL HOURS

 

OMNI Club: Through Omni Club, a youth development program, students will find the following resources: Opportunities to explore performing arts, hobbies, and a variety of sports; and Connections to local community leaders and organizations. It also delivers alternative after school programs that build healthy, productive, and creative spirits and minds. Facilitate maximum participation in school-sponsored clubs and events at middle school.

 

 

  

 

  

Student Council (STUCO)

Margaret Buerkle Middle School's Student Council (STUCO) is recognized as a Gold Honor Council by the Missouri Association of Student Councils and by the National Association of Student Councils. The advisors are Cathy Helfrich and Susan Weedman. Six students compose the executive board and help facilitate all activities. General elections for 7th & 8th grade are held at the end of the previous year and 6th grade at the beginning of 6th grade.

Science Club

      Meets once a month  (day to be determined by members) Students learn CPR; help with Buerkle's aluminum can & paper recycling; play games like scavenger hunt, science trivia & conservation; work on cooperative projects to stimulate social skills.

 

  

 

  

 

  

Yearbook Staff

Yearbook Staff

     Membership to this staff is limited to 4 dedicated students per grade level. Students must obtain and fill out an application to join. These applications should be turned in as specified on the application. Applications are reviewed by teachers for recommedation.

      Members will design the complete yearbook, as well as help distribute them in the spring.   Job assignments will be taking pictures of events and students, all layouts are done online, computer technology is a must, must be able to attend meetings on a weekly basis for the entire school year.  Any questions, please feel free to contact me at the email address available.
